At Children’s Dental Group, our Gardena children’s dentist along with the rest of our staff are here to provide your child with the services and tools they need in order to start their experience with oral health and hygiene off right. We work hard every single day to make sure that your child is educated about how to take care of their teeth and also feels comfortable and relaxed for the entirety of each visit. Many of the procedures that our Gardena children’s dentist performs on a daily basis are in the realm of preventative care services or dentistry practices that will aid your child later on.
One of the services that fall under this category is the use of space maintainers. A space maintainer is used if your child has a baby tooth that falls out too early. Baby teeth can fall out before they are meant to for several reasons, including: having the tooth knocked out as a result of falling or another trauma to the mouth, the tooth needing to be extracted because it is severely decayed, the tooth being missing from birth, or the tooth being lost due to an illness that affects the teeth. The reason why a tooth falling out early is significant is because the baby tooth serves as a guide for the permanent tooth to grow in properly in its place, and so if the baby tooth is gone too far in advance of the permanent tooth’s eruption, the permanent tooth can grow in at the wrong position, or other permanent teeth close to the space can move around and erupt in its place. A space maintainer is made of either plastic or stainless steel, and it is put in place in order to save the spot for the permanent tooth until it is ready to erupt. This is a highly effective interceptive and preventative treatment that can often save you a lot of time and money in dental work in the future for your child as a result.
